It has been many years since we met, Jason, and I have never met your children. But through all these years of being connected to the Hotchkiss family, I have heard your stories, lived the white water rafting and beach camping trips vicariously, and poured over the photographs of my nephews and niece playing with their cousins.
I never had the privilege of meeting Cassandra. Hearing about her from Austin and Rachel, reading about her now, seeing her in the video clip Zoe posted on her fb site, I can only wish I had.

Cassandra’s story is one of incredible inspiration. I enjoyed getting to know her when she would come help out in our kindergarten classroom, Dante was very precious to her. Amada went for her first partial day at school today – a little overwhelming, but so heartwarming to see all of her little friends and classmates so happy to see her. They were making a list of animals with wings and her hand shot up “A Rufus Sided Towhee!” which we had just seen on our porch. Her teacher looked to me to see if there was indeed such a thing and I just nodded. In the week that we have been back, she has learned to identify every bird at our feeders.
The first knitted square arrived yesterday from Barb Bell in Durango and it is beautiful. These are going to be one of a kind gorgeous love quilts for the kids. 12″ X 12″ knitted square, any color, design, or pattern – just a potluck of love and prayer to keep the babies warm and loved. Don’t worry about time, just send it when you can. (Send to Gramma Carol, 1718 Mariposa Drive, Durango, CO 81301)
Thanks again for all your love and contributions – all of the extra expenses and loss of income while we take care of the kids are a little intimidating, but each day brings new help and support. Noah and David’s school are running two benefit concerts to raise money for the family!
I hope that the holiday season is wonderful for all of you and the new year will bring great healing and peace.

I have been thinking about the “Legacy Art and Music” camp 2010 and would like to have Cassandra be part of the legacy along with Rich Mullins. I would like to have a film class in her honor. I looked up the meaning of the name Cassandra. Wow, in the Greek it means “mans defender, warrior”. She truly was a warrior in full pitched young life.

We have a young British friend (in his twenties) who looks like a good looking version of Tom Cruise. He lost the use of his legs in an accident when he was four; his athleticism is evident from the moment you meet him and he is a totally independent man. He spent some time in Big Bear, CA learning to fly – they have a school there, run by a man who suffered a similar injury in World War II.
